1 yesterday paid a visit to the Grand Secretary, Li Hung Chang, in order to congratulate him upon his 74th birthday, his appointment as Special Ambassador at the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Russia, and on the occasion of the Chinese New Year.
His Excellency received me very cordially and spoke of his approaching journey, and particularly of his projected visit to England, to which he said he was looking forward with great anticipations.
He requested me to inform Your Lordship of his intention to visit London, and I said that I had already had the honour to do so (in my despatch No.58 Confidential, of the 12th instant), and that I was sure that nothing would be wanting in the reception of so distinguished and eminent a statesman
